Whats your style?
How did you find your style?
Shall I change my style?
Over the years some people have asked me questions like these and some I have asked of myself.
When I've visited students some of them have talked about their work in a slightly worried voice and said "I'm trying to find my style" or at a random social event someone has asked "What style of illustration do you do?"

Happy New Year to everyone. Hello to the new year, new work, tax returns, short days
and long nights. Those days when the fluff from your new winter jumper inevitably
ends up in your scanner and your coffee goes cold before you've had a chance to drink it.
We all know how hard it is to get going in the morning and wake our eyes up enough to
start making things happen.

As the kids go back to school, I thought I'd try and get back into the day to day swing of things by writing my own summer holiday notes.
I spent most of August on Anglesey, North Wales. It's where I grew up, where my parents still live and where we all seem to migrate back to in the summer to regroup, drink lots of tea and spend hours on various beaches.

I'm so excited to finally show you my new project with picture book legend Katharine Holabird and Hodder. It will be published on September 4th.

Mark and Me.
This month Mabel and Me - Best of Friends by Mark Sperring and myself will be published by Harper Collins, and I will be emotional. This book has a special place in my heart. In fact, the themes in the book itself seems to sum up it's own back story.
To start this story we have to go back to circa 1997. I was a struggling illustrator and having given up on London due to lack of fundsSarah Warburtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02504679717416790019noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165773028773462970.post-51491788669763359992012-10-23T14:44:00.002+01:002012-10-24T15:27:14.150+01:00For the love of endpapers
Opening up a picture book, before you even get to the title page, you catch a glimpse of artwork that gives you a tantalising snapshot, detail or mood of the story you're about to read. Silently (and often not so silently) I make a little 'Wooo' noise. Don't you love endpapers? I just adore them.
As an illustrator, endpapers can just be a dream. I had a great day on Twitter today indulging in a game of 'quickdraw' with illustrator James Brown. It's a game he and another illustrator devised where we are challenged to draw something. The first person to finish and post to Twitter wins. It was thoroughly enjoyable AND a good way to break out of the illustrators 'block' I've been having a bit of this week (too much staring at a blank page Sarah Warburtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02504679717416790019noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165773028773462970.post-18892305868765216042012-09-06T13:17:00.000+01:002012-09-06T14:49:26.959+01:00Foiled! Back in 2001, I never used a computer. I was totally married to my paint, pens and inks. I refused to believe that I (personally) could achieve anything visually pleasing with the warmth and richness I often wanted in my work on a......(intake of breath)....computer.
However, a friend badgered me and introduced me to Photoshop. I never learnt how to use it properly. No laughing please. With my new bamboo drawing tablet I noticed one day that you could do animation with it. You'd think having an animator husband I'd have absorbed some kind of ability by osmosis - but no, I don't think so! It's really mind boggling. I have no idea what I was doing, what I was drawing or where it was going. Maybe some planning might be a good idea? I've just started work again on the annual Christmas Pantomime for the Theatre Royal Winchester. This year its Aladdin. Can't wait to get stuck in. It's always a lovely job to do, just really different and lots of fun. Today, I've begun and created Panto Panda for initial summer advertising. It's already making me smile.
I hope those Pandas in Edinburgh are having an equally fun day ;)

Not quite sure what to make of this post. I've been so busy on various book projects recently I've been really quiet on the doodle/blog front ( have a dreadful cold too)......Until this monster jumped out of the brush!

Happy Birthday to you Mr Dickens. 200 years old. You've aged well.
I've never been so lucky as to illustrate a Dickens story. Funnily enough this week I had the urge! Dickens has been everywhere these past few months. I was really impressed with the BBC version of Great Expectations over Christmas (2011) and this week, the internet had a distinctly Dickensian feel with his 'trending' on TwitterSarah Warburtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02504679717416790019noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165773028773462970.post-76943651091960665912012-01-23T14:22:00.000+00:002012-01-23T14:26:40.291+00:00Finding a character - The Princess and the Peas.

I've been hankering after doing some 'proper' slapdash painting with watery inks and pencils. Don't get me wrong, I love my mac but there's nothing like the splash of paint on paper, especially if you haven't quite worked out what you are doing. I've been looking at the old covers from the Madeline books which are just a great mixture of loose ink drawing, bold colour and great drawing.
Despite Sarah Warburtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02504679717416790019noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165773028773462970.post-59861955530472855032011-10-31T11:45:00.000+00:002011-10-31T12:48:38.170+00:00Booooooooooo!
Happy Halloween everyone. Its one of my favourite times of the year. I feel more at home in a jumper and thick socks, making stews, carving pumpkins and drawing spooky pictures. It confuses me slightly that the media these days seem to think that celebrating Halloween over here is a new thing. I remember lots of Halloween parties when I was younger in the early 80's. What a great day. The Brillustration group http://brillustrationbristol.blogspot.com/ (myself included) had a wonderful day on Saturday 8th of October, drawing live in the window of Blackwells bookshop Bristol - creating a 'free form' window display with no pre-sketches and no real plan! It's been really exciting and fun to have been working on a book with everyone at Nosy Crow these past few months. They've just released their Cinderella app which is wonderful and keeps my two kids quiet. The artwork is just gorgeous and there's lots to play with. It's my 4th year producing the marketing and poster artwork for The Theatre Royal Winchester. It's great fun working for these guys as they are committed to using artwork instead of photography and they're really creative and fun in their approach. The panto is consistently a huge success for them every year and I'm glad to be a small part of that.
